Meeting Report: The impact of global aid funding cuts on people and programmes in South Sudan

This report was written by Leben Nelson Moro and Jennifer Palmer for the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP).

This meeting report from a roundtable discussion organised by SSHAP and the University of Juba explores some of the impacts of aid funding cuts in South Sudan amid a severe economic recession – made worse by the war in neighbouring Sudan -, a food crisis, widespread chronic flooding and outbreaks of disease. The aid cuts, most notably those by the United States, have particularly affected the health sector. The participants called upon the South Sudan government and aid organisations to adopt a policy shift that reduces the country’s overdependence on external funding and prioritises domestic investment in critical sectors; as well as focusing on co-financing programmes; and exploring alternative funding sources for aid, cooperation and peacebuilding projects.
