Managing risk and security: How humanitarian organisations adapt in conflict zones

This paper was written by Marie-Luisa Messerschmidt andEmelie Guth.

This thesis explores how humanitarian organisations navigate and manage security issues in the conflict zones. Using case studies of three countries, including South Sudan, this report highlights the importance of conducting risk assessments and integrating local people and knowledge, thereby fostering community engagement, to better understand the local contexts organisations work in. However, these measures face hurdles, such as bureaucratic red tape, and dilemmas stemming from other security strategies that focus on physical barriers and withdrawal from affected communities to protect their staff. The paper outlines the need to further explore and understand the complexities of humanitarian aid in conflict zones.
