Blood and relational selfhood: crisis and sacrifice among the Nuer of South Sudan

The report discusses how Nuer people perceive crises, including climate change-induced crises. Using the notions of selfhood and vulnerability, the study found the centrality of “blood”, which links humans with divinities, rain, cattle, and fruits that contribute to collective resilience. The study recommends that the international community consider the Nuer perception of uncertainty through observing their cattle-based rituals and moral practices that help them navigate crises of self.
