President Salva Kiir reached deals in January with major opposition commanders who broke away from his main rival Vice President Riek Machar. The accords are a mixed bag, opening space for resolving bitter wrangling over the northern city of Malakal but increasing odds of wider infighting among opposition ex-comrades. The agreements deal with two flashpoint issues – stalled army unification and the Malakal dispute, which has prevented resolution of the conflict in Upper Nile state….

The year ahead will come with risks of further political violence, which UNMISS should strive to prevent, especially as the 2023 elections approach. The UNMISS mandate must remain focused on the implementation of South Sudan’s peace agreement. But the mandate must also continue to prioritize the protection of civilians and…
The organised local and sub-national violence in Tambura County has resulted in high levels of displacement within and beyond the county since June 2021. While the conflict has been presented as ‘inter-communal’ or ‘ethnic’, it has its roots in inter-elite conflicts at the national and sub-national levels. The humanitarian response, which is urgently needed, should be conflict sensitive by considering conflict issues, primarily those related to the movement of people and its link to identity…
In February 2022, South Sudan’s transitional unity government will be two years old, with just one year remaining to achieve the goals set out in the 2018 ‘revitalised’ peace agreement. Although a fragile ceasefire is largely holding and some progress has been made towards implementing the agreement, most of its tasks remain undone. Download
