Climate, Peace and Security Fact Sheet: Abyei

This fact sheet was put together by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

This report assesses the intersection between climate, peace, and security in the Abyei Administrative Area. As communities largely depend on climate-sensitive livelihoods such as cattle herding, farming, and seasonal migration, the report finds that the increased occurrence of flooding and prolonged dry spells in recent years has led to a reduction in crop yields. This negatively affects livestock rearing and displaces households. Limited basic services and poor infrastructure, combined with weak governance, constrain the coping capacities of local communities and increase their need for humanitarian assistance. The report provides insights into how the disputed status of Abyei impedes long-term development planning to address interconnected challenges, including climate-related security risks.
