“A boy should be a fighter” Addressing harmful masculinities driving cattle-related violence

The report discusses the relationship between the socialisation of boys and the cattle-related violence in South Sudan.  The report finds that the boys’ socialisation to defend their communities, their livelihoods, and “their” girls and women, against other communities by force causes cattle-related violence, marginalizes women and girls, and normalises gender-based violence both in intimate relationships and in inter-community conflict. Finally, the report recommends that peacebuilding actors implement the Marial Bai Agreements between farmers and cattle herders in the state of Western Bahr el Ghazel and Warrap to address cattle-related conflict. Moreover, it outlines ways to address age- and gender-specific drivers and social norms that promote violence, to reinforce intergenerational dialogue, and to promote meaningful engagement of women and girls.
