From conflict to cattle: Gender, Culture and Climate in South Sudan’s Pastoralist Violence

This report explores the intersection between gender, cattle-related conflict, and climate change among South Sudan’s pastoralist communities. The report concludes that deeply embedded cattle economies linked to gender-based violence, marriage, status, and social cohesion, have been entangled with militarised cattle raising, environmental degradation, and harmful gender norms. The report provides a set of recommendations, including the application of a gender-transformative approach to peacebuilding, and the better integration of customary leaders into governance and climate-smart livelihood programs, among others
