The role of culture in conflict and peacebuilding among the Balanda and Jurchol communities in Western Bahar El Ghazal

This paper discusses the role of symbolic communication in conflict and peace in South Sudan. Using the case study of Jur River and Wau Counties of ‘s Western Bar El Ghazal State, the paper concludes that symbolic communication plays an instrumental role in both causing conflict and fostering peace. To provide sustainable peace, the paper outlines how meaningful local cultural symbols can be integrated into peacebuilding interventions.
